Appointments – How to Get the Right Care
🚨 Is this an emergency?
Do not wait for a GP appointment if you have a serious or life-threatening medical emergency.
Call 999 immediately for emergencies such as:
- Severe chest pain or suspected heart attack
- Severe difficulty breathing
- Signs of a stroke, such as facial weakness, arm weakness or difficulty speaking
- Severe bleeding
- Loss of consciousness
- A serious injury or other life-threatening emergency
If you need urgent medical help but it is not a life-threatening emergency, you can contact NHS 111 Wales by calling 111 or using the NHS 111 Wales website.
How to Get the Right Help
Not every health problem needs a GP appointment. Depending on your symptoms or circumstances, you may be able to find advice, access another NHS service directly, or refer yourself without speaking to the surgery first.
Please use the options below to help you find the most appropriate care.
💚 Self-Help Hub
Find trusted information and advice to help you manage common health problems and understand when you may need further medical support.
🔗 Self-Referral Hub
Some NHS services can be accessed directly without needing a GP appointment or referral. Check the Self-Referral Hub to see which services are available.
📅 Routine Appointments
Routine appointments are available 48 hours in advance or up to approximately 2 weeks ahead in the afternoon, subject to availability.
Both telephone and face-to-face appointments are available.
We recommend that the best time to contact the surgery about a routine appointment is after 2pm, Monday to Friday.
A selection of routine appointments is also available digitally throughout the day using the NHS Wales App.
🩺 Urgent Appointments
If you have an urgent medical problem that cannot wait for a routine appointment, please contact the surgery.
Urgent requests will normally be considered for a same-day appointment.
Our trained reception team will ask you for some information about your condition. This helps us care-navigate you to the most appropriate service or clinician.
Your information may then be assessed by the on-call GP so that the practice can determine the most appropriate next step.
⏳ Routine Appointment Waiting List
If you request a routine appointment and there are no routine appointments currently available, you may be offered the opportunity to join our routine appointment waiting list, subject to eligibility criteria.
Patients joining the waiting list will usually be offered a routine appointment within approximately 2–4 weeks of their request.
❌ Cancelling an Appointment
If you cannot attend your appointment, please let us know as soon as possible.
Cancelling an appointment you no longer need allows us to offer the appointment to another patient.
🏠 Home Visits
If you are able to attend the surgery to see a clinician, please do so. Home visits are intended for patients whose medical condition means they are too ill or physically unable to attend the surgery.
If you believe you require a home visit, please telephone the surgery as soon after 8am as possible. This helps the GPs plan their visits for the day.
A GP may telephone you first to obtain more information and determine the most appropriate care. In some circumstances, another healthcare professional may be asked to visit instead.
Unfortunately, a lack of transport alone is not normally a reason for requesting a home visit. Patients who are medically able to attend the surgery are expected to arrange suitable public or private transport.
🦷 Dental Problems
If you are suffering from dental pain or another dental problem, please do not book a GP appointment. Dental problems should normally be assessed by a dentist.
If you are having difficulty contacting your own dentist, you can contact the Gwent Dental Helpline on:
The helpline is available Monday to Friday, 9am–4pm.
Patients who are not registered with a dentist may also be able to obtain an appointment through the helpline, and the team can provide information about NHS dental practices accepting new patients in the Gwent area.
